small family, and now I became one of a community of women, all but one complete strangers to me. There was no privacy, not even a bedroom to myself, only a cubicle. My idea of hell has always been a place of noise and cold, and this first winter in London certainly fulfilled these conditions and nothing but a sort of dogged desire not to give in enabled to go through with the work which I was given to do.
